Active Essex is Here!

sportessex_logo_4_colour_no_tag

There are some changes on the horizon for our organisation as we are changing our name to Active Essex by the end of the month.

You may be aware that during 2011 we conducted a consultation with the help of sport consultants Continuum Sport & Leisure.  After the coming together last year of the sportessex, PE & school sport and the Essex 2012 legacy team under one Director Jason Fergus, the consultation was to help us ascertain with partners on what the vision, purpose, function, and governance of the new Partnership should be moving forward, The final report sought to obtain support for the implementation of the recommendations for phase 2, and these were accepted and agreed by the Executive Board.

In short this means that we will have changed our name to 'Active Essex' by the end of  February and with our partners we will aim to create a more physically active and sporting environment for all people in Greater Essex to increase participation.

We will issue regular communications to keep you updated with the latest developments, in our new section the David East blog.  For now make sure you visit us on Facebook or Twitter - @ActiveEssex and even sign up to our newsletters as there is lots coming up in this fantistic 2012 Olympic and Paralympic year, you really don't want to miss out!

ESSEX HOSTS ITS FIRST SPORTMAKERS WORKSHOP AFTER SUCCESFUL LAUNCH CAMPAIGN

defaultIn October County Hall was brought to a standstill as Sportessex, the County Sports Partnership in Essex, launched the nationwide SportMakers scheme across the county, by ‘flashmobbing’ County Hall.

View the Video Here>>>

Since the launch, the video has gained over 2,000 views on Youtube and enough interest to begin running the first of its SportMakers workshops.

sportmakers_main_logo_v_thumbToday Essex County Council announces the first workshop, being held at The University of Essex on 2nd February, where over 150 University students and faculty are expected to attend.

Sportessex will be hosting a number of these informal and interactive workshops, where attendees will gain the skills to encourage others to get involved in sport.  SportMakers will also be invited to work with organisations that need their help, and join forces with other SportMakers who want to make sport happen locally.

There’ll also be opportunities for SportMakers to meet top athletes and plenty of other incentives to stay involved.

Councillor Stephen Castle, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and the 2012 Games and Sport England’s Regional Sporting Champion for the East of England, commented, ‘The FlashMob was such an inspiring way to launch SportMakers here in Essex! SportMakers is a fantastic scheme which will encourage more people across the county to get involved in sport. These workshops will hopefully highlight how anyone can be inspired by the London 2012 Games and that anyone can be a SportMaker, simply by encouraging others to get involved in sport.  I urge the people of Essex to join in and come and attend one of our workshops’.

Sport Makers is part of the Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country.  It aims to inspire 1400 people across the county to get involved in sport, with each of them simply spending 10 hours of their time organising or leading sporting activities in their community or workplace.

Hayley Pegg, from Southend West School Partnership who has recently signed up to SportMakers commented ‘I have always loved sport and this is a perfect way for me to encourage others to get involved, get active and be inspired to take up a new activity. I can not wait to get started and I really feel these workshops will help me learn the essential skills I need to influence people and make a difference’.

To find out more about becoming a SportMaker visit www.sportmakers.co.uk or to see what sport you can get involved in across the county visit  our Sport Makers Page.

Local college student Ashleigh targets basketball scholarship in USA

A student at SEEVIC College, Benfleet is targeting a basketball scholarship at an American University later this year thanks to her new found confidence which she attributes to studying the Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE).

Created by SkillsActive and funded by the Skills Funding Agency, AASE is a sports performance programme for young talented athletes. It’s designed to directly measure an athlete’s ability to plan, apply and evaluate their development in the appropriate technical, tactical, physical and psychological aspects of their sport. It also addresses wider issues such as lifestyle, career development, communication and health and safety.

Ashleigh Munns, 17 from Basildon is not a typical college student; she juggles studying for three A levels, the AASE programme and playing top flight basketball for her club Sevenoaks Suns which means she’s up against senior GB internationals every week. She has all but given up her social life to reach her full potential and travel the 80 mile round trip to club training twice a week in Sevenoaks, but her hunger and desire shows no bounds.

Choosing to enrol on the AASE basketball programme at SEEVIC, as the only girl alongside 13 boys, has been a turning point that she believes has really increased her confidence and self belief. She now has her sights set on a place at an NCAA Div 1 or Div 2 University to further her playing career, inspired by several club team mates at Sevenoaks Suns that have chosen to study in the USA.

Looking back, she said “before I started at College, I didn’t have as much confidence generally. At first I hated not having a social life and not seeing my school friends but over the last 12 months, I have totally committed to basketball and AASE was the missing link to help my game and develop me as a stronger and more confident person.”

Her selection for the AASE basketball Leonardo trip to Germany for two weeks last summer, was she says ‘one of the most amazing experiences of my life’, not because they won four out of five games but she found a new self-belief in her ability instilled by the coaching team and team mates that became close friends.

The AASE programme involves regular strength and conditioning sessions which complement her club training sessions, and individual mentoring and performance analysis totalling ten sessions per week. The style of learning and work ethic is now instilled in her training and performance she commented, “I didn’t used to like working hard, now I love being pushed to my limits and I know working hard brings results, it’s the only way to improve”.

Ashleigh’s goal for 2012 is to be selected for the England U18 team to compete at the European Championships in August and as the Olympic Games comes to London, she hopes women’s sport, in particular basketball, will be elevated to where it belongs, commenting; “it’s just not taken seriously enough in this country, but in my experience the AASE programme is really helping to move things in the right direction.”

Brearey is World Champ

trophies.web

The start of 2012 was an exciting time for Sam Brearey. The Sport Essex supported, and Essex sports personality of the year nominee, travelled to Australia, for the Fireball world championships. Sam won silver last year by a single point, and was determined to do better this time around. With the weight of being the current European champion, and the favourite for the event, Sam said “we knew it would be tough, and people would want to beat us. We knew there wouldn’t be any friends on the water, but there rarely are”.

The event started well with Sam setting the early pace, and after switching between 1st and 2nd in the overall results table, with a few days to go, Sam was firmly set on the top spot, with the Australian crew behind being the only real challengers to the Gold medal spot.

Going into the final day Sam had a 4 point lead over the Australians, it was his to lose. However, the first race of the day saw him sail his worst race of the championships and leaving the Brits and aussies on equal points for the final race. In short, the world championships would be decided on a single race, whichever team beat the other would win the title.

winning.webIt was a tense race, with Sam leading for the start before being over taken by the Australians. With just two legs to go until the finish Sam overtook the Australian pairing and never looked back, he crossed the line meters in front of the aussies, a world champion at last!

Sam now holds the European title that he will look to defend in July this year, and the world title. No sailor has ever held the fireball world, European and national title simultaneously, something Sam is aiming for! “We aren’t thinking too far ahead. First job is to try and retain our European title, and then who knows. We always go out to win, and if we sail to our best I think we are hard to beat”.

After returning from Australia Sam said: “It is an amazing feeling to be a world and European champion in the same year! A huge thank you must go to everyone who has supported me to get me this far. It is this support that makes these opportunities become reality, and it is nice to pay them back with a win on the other side of the world.”
