What is Equality & Diversity?
Sports Equality is about changing the culture and structure of sport to ensure it becomes equally accessible to all members of society irrespective of their race, gender, age, religion, ability, sexual orientation or economic status.
Sports equality is about fairness in sport, having regard for difference, recognising inequalities and taking steps to address them.
Sports Equality is about making sure that all people realise and fulfil their potential, at what ever level they aspire to.
How is sportessex addressing Equality & Diversity?
sportessex will strive to ensure that sports and physical activity opportunities are available to all irrespective of gender, ethnic origin, age, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status or ability.
sportessex will allocate resources and budget to actively raise participation levels in sport among the target groups within all of its programmes and activities.
sportessex will ensure that sports equity is and remains a fundamental and integral part of its work and has adopted an equality policy and action plan to maintain this principle.
sportessex has achieved the 'Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport' Foundation Level to help with this work and is committed to achieving Preliminary Level. The Equality Standard is a mechanism for improving access and increasing participation and involvement in sport and physical activity from under-represented individuals, groups and communities, especially women and girls, ethnic minority groups and disabled people. The standard will assist the organisation in developing equality-proofed policies, structures and processes and will allow for performance to be assessed, ensuring continuous improvement in equality.
What is your role within equality & diversity?
sportessex is providing a platform for sports equality and diversity across the county within the public, private and voluntary sectors. However, as The Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport points out, supportive noises are not enough on their own.
We all have a role to play in levelling the playing field and improving the pathways into sport for those that remain socially excluded, we therefore implore you to take action.
Whether a volunteer, coaching professional, local business or public service officer, you can make a positive difference by embracing equality & diversity;
Increase the number of participants, members, coaches, officials, spectators and volunteers by reaching new audiences.
Enhance the skills and knowledge base of staff, members and volunteers.
Help meet legal duties thereby reducing the likelihood of litigation.
Ensure democracy and the sound governance.
Improve chances of accessing funding and sponsorship.
Improve quality of service.
