What is Sport Unlimited?

Sport Unlimited is one of the five work areas which forms part of the 5 hour offer for children and young people. It aims to ensure that up to 900,000 children and young people in the 5 to 19 age range from the ‘semi sporty’ population segment, throughout the country, take up an additional 2 hours of term time high quality sports activities.

These sports activities should be attractive, what the young people want to do and enthuse young people to continue to participate in their chosen activity This work area will run from  2008 to 2011 is funded by the Department for Children, Families and Schools and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

sportessex have been and still are working with a wide range of Schools, Local Authorities and Community Organisations to design and deliver a wide range of activities which will take place in a range of different settings and will appeal to the ‘semi sporty’ young people.

* The work area has a number of key elements which must be met and they are as follows:
* Be aimed at young people who are ‘semi sporty’ i.e. they are aged between 5 and 16 years and are currently participating in 2 hours of PE within the curriculum and one hour outside of curriculum time per week. For 16 to 19 year olds, the activities must be aimed at young people who are currently participating in one hour of sport per week.
* Take place in out of school hours, (e.g. evenings and weekends) and in term time.
* Be a minimum of one hour and a maximum of two hours.
* Run for a maximum 10 week period, minimum 8 weeks
* Demonstrate sustainability/exit routes beyond the 8 to 10 week period.
* Be affordable, accessible, appropriate and attractive.
* Be high quality and be a positive activity.
* Meet minimum safeguarding standards.
